Modeling Climate Change

 

Global climate change predictions are based on integrated biophysics biogeochemical process models. Soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics a key component of these models is however included as classic soil organic pools based on a traditional understanding of SOC as a macro-aggregate of cross-linked plant/microbial biopolymers of unknown but chemically complex structure.

However, very recently there has been a paradigm shift in our understanding of SOC based on its molecular scale speciation. Biomineral Systems is conducting research to improve the predictive accuracy of climate change models.

In particular, we are working to formulate soil organic carbon pools based on experimentally determined mineralization efficiency of model soil organic systems based on recent spectroscopic evidence for SOC speciation. These newly formulated soil organic carbon pools will then be included in climate change models for accurate predictions of climate change and incorporated into environmental policy decisions.
